Cardiac and Perioperative Ultrasound Fellowship

We offer 1 cardiac and perioperative ultrasound fellowship per year.

We deliver anaesthesia care for a number of cardiothoracic and cardiological procedures, including:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

  • Mitral Valvular Surgery

  • Aortic Valvular Surgery

  • Aortic Surgery including providing an out of hours dissection service

  • Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

  • MitraClip Implantation

In addition to regular cardiac theatre & cardiology cath lab sessions, there are a number of other learning opportunities available. These include spending one session per week gaining trans-thoracic echocardiography skills in the cardiology department; perioperative trans-oesophageal echocardiography with all cardiac anaesthesia consultant staff being accredited in this; as well as the opportunity to further develop skills in point of care ultrasound (POCUS). This knowledge is further consolidated at the weekly echo meeting in the department where we review and discuss recent interesting cases.

During the course of your fellowship with us we expect that you will acquire enough cases for certification in perioperative TOE. In addition, from the 6 month point onwards you should be able to manage straightforward cardiac surgical cases independently, and more complex ones with local supervision.

There are also opportunities to get involved in research, teaching and quality assurance projects with regular clinical support time allocated for this.

Please contact the fellowship co-ordinators Drs Abarna Devapalasundaram ([email protected]), Claire Garratt ([email protected]) or Sam Costello ([email protected]) if you have any queries.
